Happy Tweets Monday #50!

Looking back through past Happy Tweet posts, I realized that this is the 50th compilation of Tweets that I have shared on this blog based on happiness, success, and overall well-being. I have found them to be nice reminders – especially on those tough-to-live-through Mondays – of what I can do and how great my life is with the right mindset!

This week’s kind of have the theme of looking inside yourself for happiness. It is you and you alone who makes YOU happy, by what you say, think, how you act, and your perspective. So say only good, think productively, act wisely, and keep a positive perspective.

And I will work on me too 🙂 Enjoy!

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to [bind] them…

I know I have to choose happiness in order to feel it, so I write this blog as a daily reminder to be happy. For myself. That is why – as mushy and self-centered as it sounds – today I am going to write about my engagement ring. Because it makes me happy. And why not?

I have always loved sparkling things. In high school I was known for my gaudy rings. More recently, I received a necklace as a gift with a pear-shaped jewel in the middle, and that became my favorite cut: dainty, and classic/a little British-looking (later confirmed by some Brits I know–yay!).

The first conversation Timmykins and I had on the phone, we both indicated how much we adore old school style, and wish we could go back in time to the 20s-40s just to witness the style, dancing, music, and history. It was the first thing we really connected on, and it was such a unique thing for two people to have in common.

Fast Forward

2 months ago, My Precious Timmykins got down on one knee on the beach in San Diego. It was wanted more than anything, but came at a time when I least expected it. And, despite its imperfections, it was PERFECT.

I would have been the happiest girl in the world with ANY ring from this boy. I would have been fine even with a piece of wire bent into a circle or a string. But he knows me, he knows what I like, he knows us.

Timmykins presented me with a GORGEOUS ring: pear-cut center diamond, diamond halo, double strands of diamonds on either side; 59 in all! Though it is big, it isn’t giant and gaudy, which is lovely. What you can’t see in this picture is the amazing filigree and diamond detail on the top and bottom edges of the ring. This is something that kind of feels like a secret to me, because no one else notices that detail until I take the ring off to show them. The jeweler later told us that this was a style popularized in 1920s Hollywood.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a WINNER!

Not only did he know what I like, he did it all on his own AND came out with a design that he couldn’t be happier with. It is so us, and will always remind me of our first phone conversation!

It is magnificent, and I adore it more and more every day. It makes me happy to look down and admire the sparkle on my left ring finger. Because even when Timmykins isn’t with me, it reminds me of how wonderful this life is, and how every day will be a happier one by his side.

Thanks for letting me gush. #lucky girl

Happy Tweets Monday!

Good Morning, fellow Happy People!

I hope you all had a FABULOUS weekend! For some reason I slept quite a bit, and if you know me, you know I am a multitasker who just likes to get things completed and out of the way. So, it bothered me a little bit. But after a short conversation with a fellow coworker, I am going to embrace the sleep. I don’t get enough of it on a regular basis, and my body told me to stop for a bit. Honestly, I feel so much more relaxed and ready to take on the world and this week!

So, without further ado, let me pass on some of that motivation and positive energy your way with this week with Happy Tweets Monday! And, boy is it a DOOZY! Enjoy!

Spite. Revenge. Success.

NEVER act in spite of someone else.

Revenge may seem warranted. It may seem necessary. It may seem like your only option, really.

But do not let your lust for revenge require you to act in spite, or turn into a spiteful being.

The greatest revenge is success.

Move forward with your dreams as if no one ever wronged you or cut you down. Of course, those are learning opportunities, but don’t let others’ words and actions mar you so badly that you are so fogged by hatred or regret that you can’t see to the other side.

Success in your personal, professional, and every day life. Success that you wish for. Take on a hobby and thrive. Make this work project the best project ever. Start a business, take some photographs, love like you have never loved before.

Get in shape. Eat well. Nurture a family. Travel the world.

Whatever it is you want to do, let that be your end goal.

Don’t focus on hurting others like they have hurt you. Don’t pick up a hobby or a project to ruin someone else’s life. If you don’t want that job that they, too, are vying for, don’t work hard for it to show them “who’s the boss”.

Let what they have done to you ignite a fire under your childhood dreams and your bucket list. Be your own person and challenge yourself.

Even if it takes the wrongs of someone else to start it up.

Everything happens for a reason. Every person is brought into your life to teach you something. Let all teach you that everything can have a positive outcome and no one can hurt you.

What will YOU do?

One Whole

As some of you know, I recently got engaged.

For the sake of this post, let’s name him Timmykins (if you ever interact with him, he would just LOVE for you to use this nickname. I promise).

Timmykins is wonderful. He is hard-working, talented, silly, and his hugs are the best. He is one of my biggest motivators, and he is very protective of me, while also being one of my biggest challenges (next to my sister, but that is another post 🙂 — a fabulous post, mind you! I love my sister!).

Was it love at first sight? No. We have known each other for 9 years.

Is he my ‘other half’? No. Arguably, that would be my sister (my identical twin sister).

Does he complete me? Nah.

And this is what I am trying to get to: I was a whole person before he came around and showed any interest in me. I wasn’t desperately seeking someone who would stop my heart ache and fill the void in my life.

You see, to say that – or even think that – would be my telling you that I couldn’t live a full life without someone else. But that is not true.

Actually, I was doing pretty damn well by myself. I went to school where I wanted to go, studied abroad, attended film festivals and was internationally acclaimed for a short film that my sister and I made. I was moving in a zig-zagged line towards all of my goals and dreams in life.

And, guess what? I still am.

Sometimes Timmykins is a distraction. Sometimes we would rather watch a movie or go ice skating than research production techniques or work on a certificate class. But he doesn’t distract me from my end goals. He is a happy distraction that also motivates me, and he adds a little color to my life.

I am elated that he has decided to keep me around, as well as share the rest of his life with me. But, could we live our lives separately? Physically, yes.

It’s just not ideal.

Do YOU feel whole on your own? What makes you feel whole, gives you purpose?

Please share, and have a Happy Day, Happy People!

Dear Class of [Insert Year Here]

In 2011, I had the privilege of speaking to the graduating class from my high school during their graduation practice breakfast. It was only 3 years after I graduated, so I was speaking to a group of kids I knew well, and it was nice to pass on a little knowledge I had gained from 3 years of “aha!” moments following high school.

Here is that speech, in its (edited with a few explanations, etc.) entirety for you to peruse and/or use:

Quick reminder for those who don’t remember me, and intro for those who don’t know me:  Hi, I’m [RoaminTwin].  I was a senior at [insert high school here] when you were freshmen, making me a graduate of [year].  I know how honored you feel to have me in your presence, and though I know you would love for me to go on for hours, let me get right to the point.

What do you want to be when you grow up?  I know I’m not the first person to ask you this, I’m sure nearly all of you have been asked this question from the time you were 5 years old.  But, “Today i-is Friday, Friday.  We-we-we so excited, we so excited…Tomorrow is Saturday.  And Sunday comes after” (O wow, I hate myself for that, but I am trying to be hip and far out [for those who don’t remember, this is a part of that damn ‘Friday’ song by Rebecca Black, made popular for God-knows-why earlier that year. It was pertinent. Now, not so much]).  Anyways, by 3 o clock Sunday afternoon, you will be high school graduates, so what’s next?

I’m sure a hand full of you will go on to college in the fall, others will go to some kind of trade school, and some of you might be COMPLETELY finished with school all together.  But none of these options answers the question “what next?” for me or for anyone else.

Well, what should be the very first thing on your to do list is to make a play list of songs that make you happy.  There will be times you will feel upset, lonely, or just plain want to cry regardless of what you do following graduation.  I don’t know if you all got to do this, but years and years ago [blatantly exaggerated], when I was a senior in high school, one of our teachers had us each make a soundtrack to our life.  I still have that in my car.  I’m telling you, a “Happy” play list will get you through anything!  And if you need song suggestions, come to me!

Ok, now I would like to offer some advice.  Take notes, or leave it at the door, I don’t care.  Just know that these are suggestions for life after high school [or any time of your life, really], no matter what you choose to do.

First of all, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t.  You aren’t smart enough, you’re not fast enough, you are not strong enough.  Make this entire life an adventure, and don’t settle for anything less than you deserve or dream of.

Don’t ever let people talk you down, and never take no for an answer.  Especially when it comes to transferring AP and ACCP credits.  They won’t take them all at first.  Fight it.

Be adventurous.  Study abroad.  Make a movie with your friends.  Take road trips or long drives to nowhere.  I promise, you will never regret it—especially if it’s when you should be studying for a test.  Travel and learn what you like, love, and want before settling into a pattern, or joining the “real world”.

Be polite, kind, friendly and chivalrous.  Yes, even you, ladies.  It will help you stand out and keep your conscience clear.

CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE.  Seriously. If you perpetuate a negative attitude—especially towards change in your life—you won’t make it out unscathed [totally had this epiphany in the Fall of 2008. JOIN ME!].  Appreciate everything that comes your way.  Even the people that don’t stick around and the missed opportunities.  Everything comes in to your life to help shape you into the person you have to live with.  If you are negative, you will have to live with that negative person for the rest of your life.  Instead, find something to be happy about every day.  Strive to twist what seems terrible into a positive light, and smile

High school was not your glory days.  College will not be your glory days.  Your days are what you make them.  Please don’t be like some people I know and always look back on the past and how “good it was”.  You may have been star football player or captain of the cheer squad, but don’t let that be the best time of your life.

I ran into one of my favorite high school teachers during Christmas break of my freshman year of college.  When I told him I was planning on graduating early, he said to me:  “Don’t you say that.  Don’t you ever say that.  Stay here.  Stay here as long as you can.  For the love of God, cherish it.  You have to cherish it!”

Ok, so that was a direct quote from Billy Madison, but it was in the same vein.  But it really made me wonder:  was that really the best time of his life: college?  Getting married, having kids, growing old and maybe even teaching didn’t even come close to those four years?  It dawned on me that he was limiting his happiness to FOUR YEARS.

Basically, what I want to say is, don’t limit your happiness to one day, four years, or even 50 years.  Make EVERY DAY the best day of your life.  Don’t let one bad event wreck your whole week or more.  It’s your life, and you are given the free will to see things from a clear perspective.

Do what you are passionate about.  If you love doing hair and makeup, go to beauty school.  Take photography classes, write a book, travel the world, become a taste-tester.  If you follow a path that you are not passionate about, you won’t live your life to the fullest potential.  You know what they say:  GO HARD OR GO HOME

[insert dramatic pause]

For those going in to the military, thank you.

For those going into the medical field, thank you.

For those who will write and report the biggest news stories of our generation, thank you.

For those of you who will become the next head chef of a famous restaurant, please help me get in without wait-listing, and THANK YOU.

For those of you who have no idea what you want to do with your lives, JOIN THE CLUB! and thank you in advance for everything you will dream up and accomplish.  I can’t wait to find out what those imaginations are brewing.

So, don’t sweat the small stuff

Get excited about life

Sing—some of you, stick to singing in the shower

Live, laugh, love

Always  wear sunscreen

And most of all…NETWORK.  Starting with me.

I wanted to speak to you today because I know most of you personally.  Please feel free to stay in contact with me for any questions you may have, or to share what is going on in your lives.

Congratulations, class of [year], you survived [insert high school].  Now run far, far away!
